Tafāsīr: Books of Tafsīr

Tafāsīr (singlular: Tafsīr) are books of exegesis (critical explanation) on The Glorious Qurʼān. One who authors a exegesis of The Qurʼān is called a Mufassir. Many great scholars of Islām have authored their own interpretations on The Qurʼān, but herein we’ll be looking into only some of the most famous & most correct interpretations. This list will be categorized into chronological order by era.

Tafsīr Mujāhid (تفسير مجاهد)
Mufassir: Mujāhid ibn Jabr al-Makhzūmī رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ (d. 102 AH/720 CE)
Era: 2nd Century AH/8th Century CE

Tafsīr aṭ-Ṭabarī (تفسير الطبري‎)
Mufassir: Muḥammad ibn Jarīr aṭ-Ṭabarī رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ (d. 310 AH/923 CE)

Tafsīr ar-Rāzī (تفسير الرازي)
Mufassir: ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn Abī Hātim ar-Rāzī رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ (d. 327 AH/938 CE)
Era: 4th Century AH/10th Century CE

Tafsīr al-Baghawī (تفسير البغوي‎)
Mufassir: Ḥusayn ibn Masʻūd al-Baghawī رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ (d. 516 AH/1122 CE)

Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī (تفسير القرطبي‎)
Mufassir: Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Qurṭubī رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ (d. 671 AH/1273 CE)

Tafsīr Shaykh al-Islām ibn Taymīyyah (تفسير شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية)
Mufassir: ibn Taymīyyah رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ (d. 728 AH/1328 CE)

Tafsīr ibn Kathīr (تفسير ابن كثير)
Mufassir: Ismā‘īl ibn Kathīr رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ (d. 774 AH/1373 CE)

Tafsīr as-Sa’dī (التفسير السعدي)
Mufassir: Shaykh ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn Nāṣir as-Sa’dī رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ (d. 1376 AH/1957 CE)
Era: 14th Century AH/20th Century CE

Tafsīr al-‘Uthaymīn (تفسير العثيمين)
Mufassir: Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-‘Uthaymīn رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ (d. 1421 AH/2001 CE)
Era: 15th Century AH/21st Century CE
Volumes: 11
