Review:
al-ʿAqīdah al-Islāmīyyah is a small treatise written by the honorable scholar Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Jamīl Zaynū (raḥimahullāh) regarding the topic of ʿAqīdah & the correct beliefs Muslims should carry within their heart. Within this book, the author (raḥimahullāh) presents it’s content in a very concise yet comprehensive Q&A format which is very beneficial as it makes it easy for readers to both read & understand thoroughly. It’s arrangement is very similar to that of Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb’s (raḥimahullāh) Kitāb at-Tawḥīd.

Consisting of 13 chapters, the goal of this book is to clarify the true & correct beliefs of a Muslim by using only 2 fundamental sources: The Qurʾān & Ṣaḥīḥ Aḥādīth. In each chapter are questions & no question is answered except it’s response is ʾĀyāt & a statement of The Prophet ﷺ, very few times does the author (raḥimahullāh) give input or quote other than The Qurʾān & Aḥādīth. This method of teaching is remarkable due to the fact that the sources are Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ, so it allows no room to be made for he who wishes to argue against these sources or the book as a whole.

Many topics & Masā’il are brought up within this book considering it’s small size, some of the topics this book touches up on are:

  • Five Pillars of Islām
  • Six Articles of Faith
  • Human beings’ duty towards Allāh
  • Benefits of Tawḥīd & It’s 3 Aspects
  • Conditions for good deeds to be accepted
  • Shirk & it’s types
  • Permissible & impermissible means of intercession
  • Sticking to the Sunnah & Rejecting Bidʾah

& many more.

Alḥamdulillāh, this book is in great opposition to many of the acts we see today which occur from Ahl al-Bidʾah & Ahl al-Hawā such as grave worship, seeking help or intercession from the dead, making Duʿā towards other than Allāh, & other acts of disbelief which constitutes Major Shirk. It also refutes those from the likes of the Jahmīyyah & the Ashāʿirah who deny attributes of Allāh that are evidently affirmed in The Qurʾān & proclaimed by His Messenger ﷺ. Almost every form of misguidance present within the Ummah is refuted & invalidated in this book which causes it to be a near necessity, as with knowledge of the correct ʿAqīdah & what opposes it, one will benefit greatly from both as not only will one worship Allāh upon correct creed but will also be aware of it’s contrary which will result in keeping one’s self safe from it.

I say in conclusion, this is an amazing work full of many virtues that every Muslim would benefit from & should have in their library. Not only by having this book will you have the foundations of ʿAqīdah & ʾĪmān at your finger tips, but also a reference guide you can quickly pick up & refer to when needed. Undoubtedly, a great recommendation to everyone.

Benefits:

  • Short read, consisting of only 63 pages
  • Small size, won’t take up much shelf space
  • Straight to the point, lays out the foundations of what every Muslim should believe
  • In refutation towards the deviated groups & advocates following the established Sunnah
  • Some Aḥādīth are quoted with multiple references, gradings, & may include commentary
  • Translated & published into English by Dār as-Salām, entitled: Islāmic Creed Based on Qurʾān & Sunnah

May Allāh have mercy upon Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Jamīl Zaynū, accept this from him, & reward him tremendously for this great work.

All praise is due to Allāh, may His peace & blessings be upon our final Prophet Muḥammad, his family, his companions, & all those who follow him in guidance.
