Sticking to the Sunnah & Rejecting Bidʾah

From the means of perfecting one’s Islām is establishing the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ & forsaking anything that which is in contradiction towards it or newly-invented surrounding it. With al-Qurʾān & select Aḥādīth, this will be made clear ʾIn shāʾ Allāh.

SUNNAH (السنة) — THE PROPHET’S ﷺ PROPHETIC & ESTABLISHED TRADITIONS:

As regards to the Sunnah, Allāh says in al-Qurʾān:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَطِيعُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَلَا تُبۡطِلُوٓاْ أَعۡمَٰلَكُمۡ
O you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.
– Sūrah Muḥammad, ʾĀyah 33

And whatever the Messenger has given you – take; and what he has forbidden you – refrain from.
– Sūrah al-Ḥashr, ʾĀyah 7

And We revealed to you the message [O Muammad ] that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought.
– Sūrah an-Naḥl, ʾĀyah 44

There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allāh an excellent example [to be followed] for anyone whose hope is in Allāh and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allāh often.
– Sūrah al-Aḥzāb, ʾĀyah 21

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said regarding his Sunnah:

He who turns away from my Sunnah is not from me.

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim #3236, Sunan an-Nasā’ī #3217, Kitāb as-Sunnah ibn Abī ‘Aṣim #52

None of you truly believes until your desires are in agreement with what I came with.

Indeed I am leaving with you that which if you adhere to it you will never go astray after me; the Book of Allāh and my Sunnah.

You must stick to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of my rightly guided successors, hold to it and stick fast to it.

BIDʾAH (البدعة) — INNOVATION WITHIN THE RELIGION & NEWLY-INVENTED MATTERS:

In regards to Bidʾah, Allāh says in al-Qurʾān:

إِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡإِسۡلَٰمُۗ
Indeed, the [only] religion in the sight of Allāh is Islām.
– Sūrah al-ʿImrān, ʾĀyah 19

And whoever desires other than Islām as religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.
– Sūrah al-ʿImrān, ʾĀyah 85

This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islām as religion.
– Sūrah al-Māʼidah, ʾĀyah 3

Or have they other deities who have ordained for them a religion to which Allāh has not consented?
– Sūrah ash-Shūrā, ʾĀyah 21

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said regarding Bidʾah:

Whoever innovates into this matter of ours that which does not belong to it, it will be rejected.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī #2697, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim #1718

Beware of newly invented matters, for verily, every newly invented matter is an innovation, and all innovation is misguidance.

Sunan Abū Dāwūd #4607, Sunan ibn Mājah #42, Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī #2676, Musnad Amad 4/126, Ṣaḥīḥ ibn ibbān #102, al-Mustadrak ʿala aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥayn 1/95, al-Irwā’ #2455, al-Arba’ūn an-Nawawīyyah #28 | Ṣaḥīḥ to al-Hākim an-Nishāpurī, Imām adh-Dhahabī, Shaykh al-Albānī, and others — Ṣaḥīḥ Isnād to Shaykh Zubayr ʿAlī Zay

Whoever innovates an innovation or gives shelter to an innovator; then upon him is the curse of Allāh, His angels, and the whole of mankind.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī #1870, Sunan Abū Dāwūd #4530, Riyāḍ aṣ-Ṣāliḥīn #1804

*In explanation of this Ḥadīth, Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-‘Uthaymīn said: “A curse from Allāh means being expelled and distanced from Allāh’s mercy. So, when it is said ‘Allāh cursed him’, it means that He expelled and distanced him from His mercy. And when it is said, ‘O Allāh, curse such-and-such person’ it means to distance him for Your mercy and expel him from it.” See al-Qawl al-Mufīd Sharḥ Kitāb at-Tawḥīd 1/228

The most evil matters in religion are those that are newly invented, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Hellfire.

Sunan an-Nasā’ī #1578, Sunan Abū Dāwūd #4607, Sunan ibn Mājah #42, Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī #2676, Musnad Amad 4/126, Ṣaḥīḥ ibn ibbān #102, al-Mustadrak ʿala aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥayn 1/95, al-Irwā’ #2455, al-Arba’ūn an-Nawawīyyah #28 | Ṣaḥīḥ to al-Hākim an-Nishāpurī, Imām adh-Dhahabī, Shaykh al-Albānī, and others — Ṣaḥīḥ Isnād to Shaykh Zubayr ʿAlī Zay

Different types of Bidʾah exists, & it is incumbent to disown all of them. Among these types are:

  1. Mukaffarah: Innovations which are rejection of the faith of Islām; such as praying to the dead or those who are not present & seeking their help by invoking them.
  2. Muḥarramah: Forbidden innovations; such as asking Allāh’s favor through the intercession of deceased saints, performing Ṣalāh at gravesites or taking oaths there, & building tombs over them.
  3. Makrūhah: Disapproved innovations; such as praying Ẓuhr after praying Jumuʿah prayer, praying aloud for blessings upon The Prophet ﷺ after the Adhān, & etc.

*See al-ʿAqīdah al-Islāmīyyah P. 59

Now with many evidences brought from the Book of Allāh & the statements of His Messenger ﷺ; ʾIn shāʾ Allāh, it has been made clear the obligation of following The Prophet ﷺ & the necessity of dismissing other than his Sunnah.

I ask Allāh to keep us firm upon al-Qurʾān & Sunnah, & protect us from the evil within ourselves.

All praise is due to Allāh, may His peace & blessings be upon our final Prophet Muḥammad, his family, his companions, & all those who follow him in guidance.
