Abū Bakr’s Caliphate in al-Fātiḥah: Shaykh Muḥammad al-Amīn ash-Shinqīṭī’s Tafsīr of Sūrah al-Fātiḥah

Allāh says in command for us to say in al-Qurʾān:

ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ
Guide us to the straight path – The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor
– Sūrah al-Fātiḥah,ʾĀyāt 6-7

It’s been mentioned by the scholars of Tafsīr that “The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor” are four people:

  1. an-Nabīyyūn: they are those Allāh has chose and gave His Prophethood and Messengership.
  2. aṣ-Ṣiddiqūn: the extremely honest and believing. That is to say, the person who very readily submits to The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ while giving perfect sincerity to Allāh.
  3. ash-Shuhadā’: the person who was slain in Allāh’s Path. He was so named because he is assured of entrance into the Paradise and because the angels of mercy also testify to it.
  4. aṣ-Ṣāliḥūn: the individual who promptly fulfills the rights of Allāh and the rights of His servants. [1] [2]

In regards to aṣ-Ṣiddiqūn, we can draw a tremendous benefit from this in relation to Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه, which is to be elucidated, ʾIn shāʾ Allāh.

Shaykh Muḥammad al-Amīn ash-Shinqīṭī رحمه الله (d. 1393 AH/1973 CE) commentated: “From these ʾĀyāt, we extract the validity of Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq’s رضي الله عنه rule, because he is included amongst those Allāh commanded us with in the seven oft-repeated ʾĀyāt (Sūrah al-Fātiḥah) in the Great Qurʾān. This is because we ask Him to guide us to their path, so this proves that their path is the straight path.

His statement, ‘Guide us to the straight path – The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor‘, those whom Allāh has bestowed His favor upon are the truthful, and it has been clarified to us that Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه is from the truthful. So, it is clear that he is from those upon whom Allāh has bestowed His favor, those to whose path Allāh has commanded us to ask Him for guidance. Therefore, there remains no doubt that Abū Bakr is upon the straight path and his rule is valid.” [3]

May Allāh have abundant mercy upon Shaykh Muḥammad al-Amīn ash-Shinqīṭī & reward him for his great contributions to the religion of Islām.

All praise is due to Allāh, may His peace & blessings be upon our final Prophet Muḥammad, his family, his companions, & all those who follow him in guidance.
