The Honor of aṣ-Ṣaḥābah

There is no doubt about the fact that the Ṣaḥābah hold a high-rank within Islām, & anyone who believes contrary represents very questionable ʾĪmān. aṣ-Ṣaḥābah are those who transmitted the Qurʾān, transmitted Aḥādīth of The Prophet ﷺ & his life, fought battles with The Prophet ﷺ, succeeded The Prophet ﷺ, and spreaded the religion throughout various lands – may Allāh be pleased with them all.

Allāh says in al-Qurʾān regarding aṣ-Ṣaḥābah:

And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajirīn and the Anār and those who followed them with good conduct – Allāh is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.
Sūrah at-Tawbah, ʾĀyah 100

And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, “Our Rabb, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Rabb, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.”
Sūrah al-ashr, ʾĀyah 10

And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers – We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.
Sūrah an-Nisāʾ, ʾĀyah 115

The Prophet ﷺ said:

If my companions are mentioned, refrain (from speaking ill about them).

al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 10/198, Ḥilyah al-Awliyā’ 4/108, Takhrīj al-Ahyā’ 1/50 | Ṣaḥīḥ to Imām aṭ-Ṭabarānī and others – Jayyid Isnād to al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī

Do not revile my Companions. By Him in whose Hand is my life (Allāh), had anyone of you spent a pile of gold as big as Mount Uḥud in charity, it would not amount to as much as one Mudd of one of them nor even half a Mudd.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī #3450, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim #2535, Sunan ibn Mājah #161 | Muttafaqun AlayhṢaḥīḥ to both Imām al-Bukhārī and Imām Muslim

Imām Aḥmad رحمه الله (d. 241 AH/855 CE) said: “If you see anyone speaking ill of the Companions of The Messenger of Allāh , doubt his Islām.” [1]

Imām an-Nawawī رحمه الله (d. 676 AH/1277 CE) said: “You should know that abusing the Companions is forbidden and from the prohibited obscenity whether it is towards those who got caught in the tribulation among them or others, because they were giving interpretive juristic rulings during those battles.” [2]

Imām ash-Shawkānī رحمه الله (d. 1255 AH/1839 CE) said: “Whoever would not seek forgiveness for the generality of the Companions and Allāh’s mercy for them, such has contradicted the commandment of Allāh in this ʾĀyah (Sūrah al-Ḥashr, ʾĀyah 10). If one finds any grudge in his mind against them, he has certainly been afflicted by a seizure from Shayṭān and obtained great shares of disobedience to Allāh for his enmity towards His friends and the best of the Ummah of His Prophet . A door of disgrace becomes opened for him leading him to Hell if he fails to mend his ways by returning to Allāh and asking His help to remove the malice that crept to his mind against the noblest and the best of this Ummah. If the hatred worsens and he begins to abuse any of them, he has certainly submitted to the reins of Shayṭān and fell into Allāh’s anger and wrath.

Such terminal illness affects the one who is afflicted with a teacher among the Rāfiḍah or a companion among the enemies of goodness in the Ummah whom the Shayṭān had tricked and beautified for them; the concocted lies, fabricated stories, and invented fables led them astray from the Book of Allāh to which no falsehood will reach from before or behind it.” [3]

Shaykh Aḥmad ibn Yaḥya an-Najmī رحمه الله (d. 1429 AH/2008 CE) said: “We emulate the Companions of The Messenger of Allāh , believe that they are the most virtuous of this Ummah, beloved to Allāh, and the closest to the (straight) way. Allāh says:

And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers – We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.
Sūrah an-Nisāʾ, ʾĀyah 115

‘and follows other than the way of the believers’ They (the believers) are the Companions.” [4]

May Allāh forgive us & our brothers who preceded us in faith & put not in our hearts any resentment toward those who have believed. Indeed, Allāh is Kind & Merciful.

All praise is due to Allāh, may His peace & blessings be upon our final Prophet Muḥammad, his family, his companions, & all those who follow him in guidance.
